Beyond tourism.
Experience Zen.
Understand it.
Learn about Zen with a Westerner Monk
Why this is rare
In a city where temples have become tourist attractions, this experience remains genuinely exceptional. Here is why.
Access to areas closed to visitors
Experience the temple as it truly functions — not as a tourist attraction, but as a living community. The 400-year-old meditation hall is never open to the public — this is an invitation into the sacred heart of Zen practice.
Never get lost in translation
Although ordained for 40 years, Pierre remains, after all, a Westerner. His ability to understand your perspective and teach in native English or French is key to truly grasping what Zen philosophy is about.
Insightful yet entertaining
Every session is crafted to your spiritual curiosity and preference. Pierre adapts the depth and pace of teachings to match your journey, whether you seek contemplation or deep philosophical dialogue.
Your host is a writer, teacher, lecturer, poet, magician & monk
Pierre brings a rare perspective — the rigor of Zen practice combined with a cross-discipline and intuitive understanding of Western seekers. He bridges two worlds with grace and humour.
Limited availability
To preserve the sanctity of the experience, only a handful of sessions are offered each month. This is not a tour — it is an intimate encounter that demands intention and planning.
No crowd, no noise, no mass-tourism
Set aside the selfie sticks and the bustle of souvenir shops. Off the beaten path, Kōshōji opens into a realm of genuine stillness.

Typical schedule
Every experience is tailored to the individual, but here is what a typical day looks like.
